If you have direct reports - this is for you …

Happy 2018!!!

I want to take this opportunity to send you my most sincere wishes for this New Year.

I wish you that 2018 be your best year ever!

No – wait. Please allow me to say the same thing in different words – let me rephrase it …

I wish that you make out of 2018, your best year ever!

See the difference?

If I wish you the best year ever – I am wishing you good luck.

But if I wish you to do it yourself – I am giving you the responsibility of your own fate – I am passing on to you the control (and the real possibility) to make it happen for real.

So – I repeat:

I wish that you make out of 2018, your best year ever!

See?

Anyway …

Back to business:

This New Year’s Newsletter issue is about self-reflection – and action.

So –

I have ONE single question for you:

IF you have direct reports – whether you are a first time supervisor or a seasoned executive – what will you do differently this New Year (2018) to grow as a world-class boss?

In other words …

What will you do differently – in order to engage your direct reports with their work and help them deliver discretionary effort even more?

What will you do differently to commit them to you – so that their admiration for you will grow, they will become your best fans, and they will learn so much from you that they will do the same thing with their respective direct reports – and create a cascading effect?

What will you do differently to build a more cohesive, better performing team of supercharged performers?

What comes to your mind? What can you think about? What new ideas can you come up with?

Before you continue reading – stop for a second and answer the question.

Do not continue reading until you answer it.

What will you do differently?

If you don’t have a specific answer – at least try to think about possibilities:

What COULD you do differently?

Is there something that maybe – just maybe – you could try?

Remember – do not continue reading until you think about something.

Got it?

Do you already have something in mind?

If you don’t – I repeat – don’t continue reading.

But if you do – let’s move on …

Now:

What else?

Are there other tools, friends, acquaintances, etc., that could support you in this regard?

Yes?

No?

Do you have untapped resources that you are not using to their fullest? What could you use? Who could you ask?

I am talking about the performance of the team you lead – this is key, fundamental and VERY important.

When you stop and think about this …

  • Is there something that is stopping you?
  • Is there an issue and / or a problem?
  • What is the real challenge here for you?

    Once again, I am going to ask you to stop for a second – before you continue reading – and come up with an answer.

    What is the real challenge here for you?

    In regards to engaging your direct reports with their work, committing them to you, building a truly high performing team, and growing as a world-class boss at the same time – I ask you …

  • What do you really want?
  • What exactly are you saying “yes” to – and what are you saying “no” to?

    They are YOUR direct reports – you are responsible for the team you lead.

    In one word:

    What will you do differently this New Year (2018) in order to increase the engagement and commitment of your direct reports – and strengthen the performance of the team you lead?
