Your Goals on Steroids

There are three very simple ingredients that will tremendously help you reach your goals on a consistent basis …

You see … goals can be Implicit or Explicit - and Private or Public.

Implicit goals are those goals that are inside your head - you know about them and you know exactly what it is you want to accomplish.

Explicit goals are inside your head too - but also - you clearly wrote them on paper and you placed this paper on a place where you "see" them every day.

Now - which goals do you think you are much more likely to reach on a consistent basis, your goals that are inside your head only - or your goals that you also "see" on a daily basis?

You are much more likely to reach your goals that you "see" every day of course.

On a slightly different note - private goals are those goals that only you know about.

And public goals are goals that the world knows about.

By "the world" I mean the people you care about.

In the case of a personal goal, "the world" could mean your family and friends. In the case of a professional goal, the "world" could mean your employees, your boss, and/or the rest of the organization.

Again - which goals do you think you are much more likely to reach on a consistent basis, your goals that you only know about – or your goals that the world knows about?

You are much more likely to reach your goals that "the world" knows about of course.

The three very simple ingredients that will tremendously help you reach your goals on a consistent basis are … (1) make your goals Explicit, (2) make your goals Public, and (3) make your goals SMART.

SMART simply means …

Specific - is it impossible that different people interpret your goal in different ways?

Measurable - how will you know that the goal has been met?

Attainable - do you have all the necessary resources?

Relevant - is your goal 100 per cent aligned with your organization's vision?

Time-bound - does it have a completion date?

Conclusion:

IF you really want to exceed your expectations - make your goals Explicit, Public and SMART.
